No. 11/10 Tigers post 4-1 win on Senior Night
Oct 24, 2019 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 11/10 Memphis helped honor its senior class in style behind a 4-1 win against Houston on Thursday night at Park Avenue Campus.

Despite falling behind in the first half, the Tigers (14-1-1, 6-0-1) evened the contest before halftime. Memphis then used three goals in the second half to improve to 8-0 at home.

"It was definitely a tail of two halves. We tried to tweak a few things that didn't work so we changed it right before we scored," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "In the second half, I'm proud of the way the girls came out and put the game away."

Houston tallied the match's opening score in the 25th minute before sophomore Tanya Boychuk delivered the equalizer 14 minutes later. Taking a pass from senior Serena Dolan and sophomore Claire Abrey, Boychuk ripped a shot that sailed over the outstretched keeper for her seventh score of the season.

"That was no surprise," Monaghan added of the early Houston momentum. "There are no easy games in this league, especially Houston coming off two wins. We knew we'd get their best shot."

The Tigers gained the lead in the 54th minute as senior Stasia Mallin bent a corner kick into the left side of the net, while freshman Mya Jones added her third goal of the season moments later to increase the lead.

To cap the scoring, junior Clarissa Larisey tapped in her 14th score of the season in the 86th minute. Mallin and Larisey each finished the night with an assist to compliment their scores.

Defensively, the Tigers limited Houston (5-12, 2-5) to three shots throughout the night, including just one look over the final 66 minutes.

Memphis will return to action on Sunday as the Tigers host SMU. Kickoff from Park Avenue Campus is set for 1 p.m.
