MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Chanel Hudson-Marks received a prestigious honor with an opportunity to compete on soccer's largest international stage.
The 2018 Memphis women's soccer alumna was called into Jamaica's full National Team camp ahead of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The daughter of Jamaican-born parents, Hudson-Marks will report to camp Tuesday in St. Ann and compete Jan. 15-21 for a spot on the National Team.
"This is such an incredible honor and I can't think of a better way to go out and represent my country. It's a huge opportunity and I'm excited," Hudson-Marks said. "I found out a couple weeks ago about this opportunity, so these last two weeks I've been training and getting my fitness up."
The Pickering, Ontario native served as a lock-down defender after switching positions to start the 2018 campaign. The senior played in all 21 matches, including starts in the last 17 contests, to help lead Memphis to its first American championship last season.
"It's such a fantastic opportunity for her to have the chance to represent her country," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It's an opportunity that's well deserved, especially based on the season she had. It's always an honor for our program and university for a student-athlete to represent their country."
Hudson-Marks, who was named the American Athletic Conference's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the 2018 AAC Tournament, previously trained with Jamaica's U17 and U20 teams.
"It gave me a little bit of international experience, which is so different with a faster pace," Hudson-Marks added. "I know the full National Team will be different than some of the youth team experience, but it certainly has prepared me for this opportunity."
The Senior Reggae Girlz became the first Caribbean country to qualify for the Women's World Cup after defeating Panama in the third-place game at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in October. Jamaica drew Group C in the Women's World Cup, alongside Australia, Brazil and Italy.
