Larisey, Murphy extend scoring streaks to three matches
HOUSTON, Texas – Memphis women's soccer extended its win streak Sunday afternoon to four matches behind a 3-0 victory against Louisiana at the Rice Tournament.
A goal in the 36th minute helped Memphis (6-1-0) break through, while the Tiger offense surged for two more second-half goals.
"Today was a tough game because they put 11 players behind the ball. That makes it difficult overall to break teams down," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I thought we kept our poise and stayed patient and then found ways to get the goals we needed. Every match is different and every opponent is different. You got to figure out ways to win the game and today the girls did."
Memphis set the tone early with three shots and three corner kicks within the first 11 minutes. The Tiger offense finally broke the Louisiana defense in the 36th minute after a Jessica Lisi corner kick set up Caroline Duncan for her first career collegiate goal.
Clarissa Larisey added her seventh goal of the season to open the second half. On a pass from Marie Levasseur, Larisey found the back of the net in the 50th minute to increase the Memphis lead to 2-0.
The Tigers capped the scoring in the 86th minute. A cross from the left by freshman Grace Duncan was finished by Samantha Murphy in the box, whose header sailed past the keeper for her fourth goal of the year.
Defensively, Memphis limited the Ragin' Cajuns (1-5-2) to just three shots Sunday afternoon, while Elizabeth Moberg tallied her fourth-straight and 10th career shutout. Sunday's shutout also marks the sixth clean sheet for the Tigers this season.
Memphis returns to action Thursday at Arkansas State. Kickoff from Jonesboro, Ark., is set for 4 p.m.
