Peniston's singles run ends in Round of 16
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After claiming the program's first NCAA doubles tournament win on Thursday, the Memphis men's tennis duo of Ryan Peniston and Andrew Watson continued their postseason run by defeating USC's Brandon Holt and Riley Smith in straight sets Friday afternoon to advance to the quarterfinal round.
The Tigers' 40th-ranked duo will face Johannes Ingildsen and Alfredo Perez of Florida on Saturday at noon (CT). The Gator pair, who rank No. 4 in the country, registered a 10-6 record in dual match play this spring.
After Memphis and USC held for the first few games of the opening set, the Tigers capitalized with a break point for a 3-1 lead. The No. 10 Trojan's doubles team provided a late rally, but the Tiger duo held to take the first frame.
The Tigers continued the momentum in the second set. Memphis picked up a pair of break points to open a 4-1 lead and cruised down the stretch to complete the 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Peniston's run in the NCAA singles tournament concluded in the Round of 16 after the senior dropped his match to No. 4 Petros Chrysochos, 6-2, 6-4, earlier in the day. Chrysochos earned a couple of break points in the first set to take control early. Peniston rallied late in the second frame, but the Wake Forest junior held to close the contest.
