Apr 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS, Texas – Battling the second seed in the conference, the Memphis women's tennis team could not quite capture the momentum it needed to score an upset.
The Tigers (16-8, 3-3) dropped a hard-fought 4-1 decision to No. 26 Tulsa in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championships. The 16 wins stand as the most for the program since 2013.
The Hurricane (19-5, 5-0) struck first after rallying in doubles. Tiger duo Josephine Cao and Hanna Sohn opened the day with a win on court 3, but Tulsa responded with wins at the top two spots for the early advantage.
In singles, Tulsa extended the lead after the Hurricane took court 2.
Katherine Cao put the Tigers on the board with a victory at the No. 5 position. The sophomore posted in a 6-1, 6-4 decision to finish the season with a 12-match winning streak.
Despite narrowing the margin, Tulsa turned the momentum after a second-set tiebreak victory on court 6. The Hurricanes then clinched the match at the No. 4 spot to set the final.
Senior Anki Wind and freshman Laura Bente had each won their opening sets before their matches were left unfinished.
