Memphis in 13th place after 36 holes; final round is Tuesday
WEST POINT, Miss. – Brad Bawden shot 4-over 148 on the opening day of the Old Waverly Collegiate, but his 36-hole effort Monday wasn't enough to offset a difficult outing for the University of Memphis men's golf team.
Â
The Tigers, participating in their final regular-season tournament of the spring, finished at 46-over 622 and a tie for 13th. Ole Miss has the lead after 36 holes with a 3-under 573. The Rebels were led by national golfer of the year candidate Braden Thornberry, who had rounds of 71 and 67 to post a 6-under 138.
Â
Three top 35 teams are playing in the event, led by No. 10 LSU and No. 20 South Florida. LSU is in second place at 578, five strokes behind the Rebels. South Florida is in third place at 583.
Â
The final round of the tournament, played at Old Waverly Golf Club, will be Tuesday.
Â
Memphis, with top 10 finishes in each of its previous three spring events, opened with a 316 and closed with a 306. The Tigers entered the Old Waverly Collegiate with only one round (of nine) in the 300s.
Â
Bawden, a junior from Hockley, England, had the best 18 holes of the day for the Tigers with a second-round 73. Borja Martin, a freshman from Spain, was the only other University of Memphis golfer to shoot two sub-80 rounds.
Â
Chase Harris, a junior from Jackson, Tenn., was coming off a third-place finish in last week's Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate in Nashville, but he struggled with rounds of 80 and 77.
Â
After the Old Waverly Collegiate, the Tigers will travel to Palm Harbor, Fla., April 22-24 to participate in the American Athletic Conference Championships.
