Martin leads Memphis with three-round total of 2-under 214
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Forced to compete with only four golfers because of illness to Rodi Vlasveld, the University of Memphis battled gallantly during windy conditions at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tuesday and ultimately gained a fourth place finish behind champion TCU, runner-up Georgia and third-place Furman.
The Tigers shot 22-over 310 Tuesday and finished at 21-over 885 for the three rounds of the tournament, two of which were played Monday at the par-72, 6,913-yard course.
TCU closed at 11-under 853, which included an impressive 3-under 285 Tuesday. Georgia shot 287 for a three-round total of 10-under 854. Furman finished with a 298 for 877 and Memphis, playing its first spring event, finished ahead of Radford and Mercer, who tied for fifth-place at 890.
The Tigers were led by Borja Martin, whose 2-over 74 allowed him to finish in seventh place at 2-under 214. For Martin, it was his first career Top 10 finish.
TCU's Stefano Mazzoli was the medalist after a 7-under 65 -- one of only two sub-70 rounds shot Tuesday -- left him at 10-under 206. Georgia's Davis Thompson and Spencer Ralston were next at 208 and 210 respectively.
"Today was a disappointing result, but you are on borrowed time when you're only playing with four competitors," said Tiger coach Blake Smart. "We will get a couple of days of practice in and be ready to go to Palmetto next week."
After Martin, Brad Bawden finished in a tie for 18th at 221, Chase Harris followed at 223 for a tie at 25th and Jordan Even tied for 40th at 227. Martin shot the lowest final round at 2-over.
"I'm proud of Borja and the way he performed this week," Smart said. "He put in a lot of hard work over the break and that resulted in his first top 10."
