Men's Golf In Third At Wexford Intercollegiate
Feb 26, 2018 | Men's Golf
Final-round action is Tuesday.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Memphis men's golf team is in third place after the opening day of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
Â
The Tigers are at 1-under 575 after shooting rounds of 290 and 285 on the par-72, 6,913-yard layout. Georgia leads at 9-under 567 (290-277) and TCU is one stroke back at 568 (287-281).
Â
The final round will be Tuesday in the 18-team field that includes Furman, Dayton, Dartmouth and Mercer.
Â
Memphis's total was impressive considering the Tigers played without their top golfer, Rodi Vlasveld, who was not available due to an illness.
Â
"I'm really proud of the guys for showing grit and toughness," said Tiger coach Blake Smart. "Having your best player go down puts pressure on everyone and they did a great job of staying on task and controlling what they could control."
Â
Borja Martin paced the Tigers, playing in their first spring match, with a total of 4-under 140. He is tied for sixth. Martin shot an opening-round 71 and followed with a 3-under 69.Â
Â
In the second round, Martin was flirting with the overall lead. He was 6-under through 15 before running into trouble on the par-4 16th, which he triple-bogeyed.
Â
One shot back of Martin is Chase Harris, whose rounds of 71 and 70 left him at 141 and in a tie for ninth. Brad Bawden (72-73 for 145) and Jordan Even (76-73 for 149) also competed for the Tigers.
Â
Memphis will enter Tuesday four strokes ahead of Furman and High Point, the college from Tiger basketball coach Tubby Smith graduated.
Â
"We continue to mature and make progress," Smart said. "(Tuesday) will offer another opportunity to test ourselves."
