Tigers cap weekend with 6-1 triumph

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a setback to open the weekend, the Memphis women's tennis team got back in the win column with a 6-1 victory against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday morning at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
"I'm proud of the team. To come out and compete like they did after a tough loss yesterday was impressive," head coach Hayden Perez said. "We need to work a little more on doubles, but I am happy with our approach as a team. Our best tennis is still ahead of us, and that is exciting."
The Tigers (7-5) struck quickly in doubles with wins on court 2 and 3. Duo Katherine Cao and Hanna Sohn continued their successful spring with a 6-3 win, while Josephine Cao and Lina Hohnhold teamed up for a 6-4 win to secure the opening point.
In singles, the Ladyjacks (0-6) evened the match at the No. 2 spot before Memphis silenced any shot at a comeback effort. Anki Wind reclaimed the lead for the Tigers on court 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win. The victory for Wind was her eighth consecutive singles triumph.
Katherine Cao made quick work at the No. 4 position with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Josephine Cao provided the match-clinching win for Memphis in straight-set fashion on court 5.
Playing in her first singles match since opening weekend, Hohnhold extended the Memphis lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot. Claire Sullivan battled through a third-set tiebreak and scored a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory on court 3 to set the 6-1 final score.
Following an off weekend, the Tigers head to Florida for a trio of matches. Memphis will face Penn State in a neutral-site match on Mar. 8 in Orlando, before returning to conference play at USF on Mar. 9. The Tigers will cap their three-match road trip with a meeting at UCF on Mar. 10.
