Kamph with top-50 finish, men's team places 15th.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of Memphis' Matthew Kamph posted a top-50 performance and helped lead the Tigers men's squad to a 15th-place finish at the 2018 NCAA South Region Championships Friday.
Â
The men's 10k and women's 6k regional races were held at the Apalachee Regional Park, also the site of the NCAA South Region Championships in 2012, 2014 and 2016.
Â
The 15th-place finish was the Tigers' highest since 2012 when Memphis placed ninth.
Â
Since the NCAA went to a regional format in 1998, Kamph is only the Memphis seventh runner to record a top-50 finish at the NCAA South Region Championships. Kamph placed 43rd with a 10k time of 32:43.3. The other six Tigers to post top-50 finishes at the regional race in program history were: Christian Schmallegger (33rd, 1999), Kevin Foltz (41st, 1999), Stefan Matschiner (24th, 2000), Adam Didyk (31st, 2003), James Maglasang (36th, 2011; 37th, 2012; 34th, 2013) and Daniel Kuhman (34th, 2011; 24th, 2012; 37th; 2013).
Â
Senior Matthew Viveiros ran the final race of his college career Friday. He placed 63rd in a time of 33:10.7.
Â
Memphis' top five runners – who count in the team score – all finished among the top-100 in Friday's regional race. It is only the second time since 1998 that all five Tigers placed in the top-100. Memphis' 2012 squad also had all five runners finish in the top-100.
Â
For all six men's runners, Friday's NCAA South Region Championships was the first 10k race of their collegiate careers. All six also made their NCAA postseason debuts Friday.
Â
On the women's side, junior Paige Sandwell and senior Kristen Adams represented the Tigers. It was Sandwell's third-straight NCAA postseason appearance. Adams ran in her second NCAA postseason and the final race of her collegiate career.
