Nov 26, 2018 | Men's Cross Country
Tigers ranked in final poll of season for first time since 2013.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a top-20 performance in the Nov. 9 NCAA South Region Championships, the University of Memphis men's cross country team finished the 2018 campaign in the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) South Region poll, which the organization released Monday.
The Tigers came in at No. 15 in the final USTFCCCA South Region poll for 2018. Memphis was No. 11 in the first regular-season poll, No. 14 in the second poll and No. 15 in the third and fifth polls. The Tigers were not ranked in the fourth poll of the season.
Memphis is one of 10 American Athletic Conference programs ranked among the nine regional polls.
It is the first time Memphis finished a season ranked in the region poll since 2013 when the Tigers were 13th at the end of that campaign. Memphis also was 10th in the final USTFCCCA region poll in 2012.
In their last outing Nov. 9, the Tigers placed 15th in the NCAA South Region Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. Matthew Kamph led the men's squad with a 43rd-place finish in the race, and Memphis' top-five runners all placed in the top-100. It was only the second time since 1998 that all five runners finished in the top-100 in the regional race (2012 was the other season).
The Tigers won two races for the second time in three seasons. In 2018, Memphis took team titles at the Brooks Twilight Classic and Rhodes College Invitational. The Tigers also placed fourth in the UAB Blazer Classic and 16th in the Greater Louisville Classic.
The Memphis track and field/cross country programs now turn the page to their indoor campaigns this weekend. The Tigers men's and women's squads open their 2018-19 indoor schedule at the Vanderbilt Opener Saturday.
