Tigers Head To Arkansas State For First Road Game

Memphis heads to Jonesboro with an 9-1 overall record against the Red Wolves
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season, heading to Jonesboro, Arkansas to take on Arkansas State Monday evening. Tip-off against the Red Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m. at the First National Bank Arena.

Memphis (1-0) at Arkansas State (0-1)

Memphis heads to Arkansas State with a 1-0 record after defeating Jackson State in the home opener last Wednesday. In a battle of the Tigers, Memphis pulled out a 68-67 victory behind a 20-point effort from freshman Jamirah Shutes in her first collegiate game. Shutes' 20 points led all players.
In addition to Shutes' efforts, junior guard Taylor Barnes scored 16 points for Memphis. She finished the night shooting 10-for-12 from the charity stripe for her first double-digit game of the season.
The Tigers had two players come just short of recording double-doubles against Jackson State. Alana Davis scored nine points and matched her career-high of 12 rebounds, falling short of her fifth career double-double. Tiger newcomer Kiana Coomber finished her first game in the Blue and Gray with nine points and nine rebounds.
Memphis is under the direction of Melissa McFerrin, who is in her 11th season at the helm of the program.
A Look At Arkansas State
Under the direction of Brian Boyer, the Arkansas State Red Wolves opened the season with a 62-60 setback at Oklahoma State.
Jireh Washington led the Red Wolves in scoring with 15 points against the Cowgirls and Akasha Westbrook pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. In addition to Washington, Lycia Peevy and Peyton Martin scored in double-digits. The Red Wolves made 25 trips to the charity stripe against Oklahoma State and finished the day making 20 of their attempts.
Historically, Arkansas State has had success in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves have three SBC titles and 11 appearances in the WNIT.
Memphis has an all-time record against Arkansas State of 9-1. This is the first meeting, however, since the first round of the WNIT in 2000.
Boyer is in his 20th season at the helm of the Red Wolves program.
