Memphis drops decision to SMU
Oct 12, 2018 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis men's soccer team fell to SMU on Friday night by a 3-0 score.
After falling behind in the first half, the Tigers were unable to find momentum, surrendering more offense to the Mustangs in the second.
SMU started the offense early in the match, taking several shots through the early going in the first half. Emil Cuello opened the scoring, netting one in the 14th minute.
Both teams struggled to find chances in the remainder of the first half. Memphis had its best chance in the final few minutes, taking a pair of shots as the clock ticked away.
The second half had hardly started when SMU found its second goal of the evening.
Memphis attempted a comeback, but shots couldn't find their way into the net. The Tigers kept the shot count close despite the score, only trailing 17-16 in that category.
The Mustangs were able to add a third goal before too long, capping the scoring for the night.
"When you get outworked, and the quality isn't there, you're going to lose," Head coach Richard Mulrooney said of the loss. "Those are crucial points we lost tonight, especially since we're getting late in the season."
Memphis will seek to get back in the win column next Saturday against Tulsa. Match time in Tulsa, Okla., is scheduled for 7 p.m.
