Women’s Soccer Falls To Gonzaga To End West Coast Trip

Sydney Kingston and Elizabeth Woerner scored for the Tigers
SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 23 University of Memphis women's soccer team returns to Memphis after falling to Gonzaga by a score of 3-2 Sunday. Memphis falls to 6-3 on the year and will return back to action at home this upcoming weekend.
"I think that overall we did not play our style of soccer," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We found ways to stay in it in the first half, the fight was there. I don't think that the mentality that was needed was there in the second half. I thought we lacked passion. We got beat in that area."
After Gonzaga took a 1-0 lead after seven minutes of play, Sydney Kingston scored her first goal of the season and second of her career in the 28th minute to equalize the match at 1-1. Kingston's goal was a header off of a free kick by Jessica Lisi.
The match continued to go back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half. The 'Zags regained the lead over 30 seconds after Kingston's goal, but Elizabeth Woerner tied up the match again in the 34th minute.
Woerner's team-leading seventh goal of the season slid past the goalkeeper on the near post. Clarissa Larisey assisted her goal.
The Tigers and 'Zags were tied at 2-2 at the break before the 'Zags scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute of the match.
Woerner led the Tigers with four shots in the match, two of which were on goal. Lisi finished with a pair of shots and in all, the Tigers recorded 10 on the day. Memphis finished with four corners compared to three by Gonzaga and Rachel Ashworth Shepard tallied four saves in the setback.
"For us to be what we can be, we have to play with passion," added Monaghan. "We have to play with our brand of soccer. If we are able to do that, good things will happen for us."
Memphis will now return home to begin conference play against SMU and Houston on Thursday and Sunday. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
