MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis head men's golf coach Blake Smart has announced his program's 2017-18 schedule, which consists of a five-match fall schedule with another five matches coming in the second half of the season. The year is capped by the American Athletic Conference Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida.
"I'm excited about our schedule this year," said Smart. "We have a great mix of courses and will see a lot of different teams. My number one priority is to always play great golf courses and expose our guys to different styles of golf."
The Tigers open the season with their own Memphis Intercollegiate, hosted at Colonial Country Club on Sept. 18-19. There will be 13 teams in the field, including Georgetown, Belmont, Western Kentucky, Western Carolina, UT-Martin, Little Rock, IUPUI, Fort Wayne, Tennessee State, Stetson, Arkansas State, and Alcorn State.
The next weekend – Sept. 25 and 26 – sends the team to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted at Shoal Creek Golf Club. Memphis last competed at the Invitational in the fall of 2014, including a win in the tournament in fall 2013. The team's three-round score of 842 at the tournament win in 2013 is tied for the second-best tournament score in program history.
After a weekend break, the team travels to College Grove, Tennessee, to compete in The Grove Intercollegiate, hosted by Middle Tennessee State at The Grove Golf Club on Oct. 8-10. Memphis played in the event for the first time last season.
The team returns to action in back-to-back weekends at the end of October, starting with the Oct. 23-24 Quail Valley Collegiate in Vero Beach, Florida, and hosted at the Quail Valley Golf Club. The team has competed in the loaded event in each of the last two seasons, including a fifth-place finish in the fall of 2015.
The fall season ends on Oct. 29-31 at the Kiawah Classic in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. The Tigers placed seventh of 22 teams in the event last season, which was also Memphis' first appearance in the tournament.
Memphis opens the 2018 spring season with its first-ever appearance at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Feb. 26 and 27.
A week later, on Mar. 5 and 6, the Tigers travel back to South Carolina, to compete at the Palmetto Invitational, the second time the program has attended the tournament. The last time the Tigers competed at the Palmetto Invitational was during the spring portion of 2004, and the squad took fifth of 14 teams.
The second weekend of April has Memphis' next event at the Ryman Intercollegiate in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 9-10. The tournament is the Tigers' first appearance at the Ryman Intercollegiate.
The Old Waverly Intercollegiate follows, and it is Memphis' fifth entry in the event over the last six seasons. The tournament is hosted at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, on Apr. 16 and 17. Memphis' top finish at the tournament was during the 2015 season when the squad placed sixth of 15 teams.
April 22 through 24 sees the Tigers at the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships, hosted at Copperhead Course at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Florida. The Tigers have placed fifth or better at each of the last three conference championships.
