Men’s Tennis To Face Oregon in NCAA Opening Round
May 02, 2017 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team is going dancing for the fifth time in six seasons. The Tigers' 15-8 overall record was enough to receive an NCAA at-large bid and earn Memphis a first round match against No. 21 ranked Oregon (18-6), Friday, May 12. That match, featuring the two seeded Ducks and three seeded Tigers, will be played at Texas A&M. The winners of the Oregon/Memphis match will face the winners of the Texas A&M/Buffalo match on Saturday, May 13th.
Oregon has been among the top 25 teams in the country for a majority of the spring and is coming off one of their best Pac-12 finishes in school history.
"Their coach, Nils Schyllander, has done a great job there building that program," Memphis Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "They are used to facing strong opponents, so they will definitely be well-prepped for our match."
Memphis comes in after falling in the American Athletic Conference semifinals to three-time American Athletic Conference champs USF.
This will be the fifth trip to the NCAAs for Memphis in six seasons and all five trips to the tournament have come under Goebel's guidance of the Tiger program. Memphis made its first-ever NCAA team appearance in 2012, then followed that with a Round of 16 appearance in 2013 and a second round appearance in 2014. After missing the 2015 draw following the graduation of five players, Memphis returned to the NCAA field last season with a roster consisting of just one senior and a number of freshmen and sophomores. The then-underclassmen of that roster now all have one NCAA tournament appearance under their belts and are looking to learn from last year's 4-1 loss to Mississippi State in the opening round.
Of Memphis' 23 matches so far this spring, 11 of them have come against teams making the NCAA tournament field on Tuesday. Memphis faced Jackson State, SMU and USF twice so far this season and also played Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Baylor and Florida Gulf Coast on the road. Memphis also hosted Tulane in a conference match at The Racquet Club of Memphis prior to the conference tournament in Florida.
This will be just the second meeting in school history between Memphis and Oregon. The Ducks won the only other meeting against the Tigers back in 2006, 5-2, in Eugene. That was Goebel's second season atop the Memphis program.
Memphis is one of five teams from the American Athletic Conference to make the NCAA tournament field. USF, UCF, Tulane, SMU and the Tigers all qualified for the 64-team field out of the eight-members of the American Athletic Conference who sponsor men's tennis.
The first and second rounds will be played May 12-13 and the Round of 16 on campus sites. The winner of each site will advance to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia, where 16 teams will compete for the national title, May 18-23rd.
