LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 28 University of Memphis men's tennis team fell to Texas Tech, 4-1, at The Falls Tennis and Athletic Club Friday.
Memphis was pushed to the limit in three singles matches, while playing five tiebreakers all told, including at No. 3 doubles, the match which decided the doubles competition.
Memphis dropped to 12-4 on the season with the loss, while Texas Tech improved to 8-10 in its second consecutive victory.
Down, 1-0, after surrendering the doubles point for the first time since defeating Harvard on Feb. 26, the Tigers knotted the match at 1-all with a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles from Kai Lemke. The junior topped the Red Raiders' Connor Curry for the win, his sixth victory of the season out of the third spot in the lineup. After a first-set tiebreaker, which he claimed, 7-5, Lemke finished the match in the second, 6-4.
TTU reclaimed the match lead as No. 60 Bjorn Thomson outlasted Andrew Watson, who entered the week as the nation's 75th-ranked singles player himself. Watson took the first set, 6-3, on court two before dropping the second by the same score. Thomson then prevailed in a third-set breaker.
Ryan Peniston evened his match with No. 42-ranked Jolan Cailleau using a 7-1 win in a second-set tiebreaker of his own, but fell in the deciding set, giving TTU at 3-1 lead in the match.
