Memphis scores two unanswered in the second half to win 2-1
STORRS, Conn. – After giving up a first half goal, the Memphis men's soccer team rallied in the second half to score two goals and defeat UConn by a score of 2-1 Saturday evening. The victory improves the Tigers record to 4-7-4 on the year and 2-2-2 in American Athletic Conference play.
"It was an exciting match," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "It was a really well played match by UConn. It could have gone either way. There were numerous opportunities on both ends. I thought we showed great resiliency after going down 1-0. To see this match out and come away with a 2-1 victory speaks volumes of the character of this team."
UConn took an early lead in the 10th minute of the match over the Tigers. After taking time to settle into the contest, Memphis held the Huskies scoreless for the rest of the first half.
In the 63rd minute, the momentum started to shift the Tigers way. Alec Velez scored his first goal of the season to tie up the contest and the assist came from Jackson Brady.
As time continued to expire, Memphis capitalized again to take a 2-1 lead over the home Huskies. This time, it was Brantley Bice who finished a David Zalzman pass for his second goal of the season.
Memphis fired eight shots in the second half and for the entirety of the contest, goalkeeper Jake Leeker finished with seven saves. The Tigers have now won the last three matches against UConn and all-time hold a 3-2 advantage.
The Tigers return home for Senior Day against Tulsa on Nov. 4. Kickoff against the Golden Hurricane is slated for 1 p.m. at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex.
