Tigers begin team practice Monday afternoon
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team had its first official team practice of the 2017-17 season Monday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers will open the regular season at home against Tennessee State on Nov. 10.
"It seems like the last five months have been a long five months," said head coach Melissa McFerrin. "We always look forward to October. Today is a day where we begin to focus a little bit more." "We've been working hard the last five months and now it begins to be a time where we put together team type things. It's a good day and the players are excited."
Memphis returns two all-conference players in Cheyenne Creighton and Brea Elmore along with seniors Breigha Wilder-Cochran and Ashia Jones. Creighton led the Tigers in scoring last season with 14.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Before transferring from UT Martin in 2014-15, Jones was the nation's fourth leading scorer and she finished her career with 52 double-figure scoring games.
This season, the Tigers welcome five additions in juco transfer Jasmine James, freshmen Alana Davis, Finess Dickson, and Jada Stinson, and Division I transfer Manaya Jones to the roster.
The non-conference schedule is highlighted with games against Power 5 foes Illinois at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, traveling to Vanderbilt and taking on Ohio State in the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev.
Memphis plays home-and-away contests against UCF, UConn, ECU, Tulsa, and conference newcomer Wichita State. Home only contests for the Tigers include USF, SMU, and Tulane, while away only games are at Cincinnati, Houston, and Temple.
Eight of Memphis' 16 league games are slated for either an ESPN2, CBS Sports Network, ESPN3 or the American Digital Network broadcast. Memphis tips off conference play against the defending American Athletic Conference champion UConn in Storrs, Conn., on Dec. 31. That match-up airs on ESPN3/SNY at 12:30 p.m. CT.
"We've been working hard the last five months and now it begins to be a time where we put together team type things. It's a good day and the players are excited," added McFerrin.
