Men's Soccer Completes Weekend Shutout With 2-0 Victory Over Missouri State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team finished the home opening weekend in style with a 2-0 shutout over Missouri State Sunday afternoon. The shutout improved Memphis to 3-1 on the year.

"It's a good feeling," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Winning in college soccer is not easy and to obviously do that on Friday night and return against a team Sunday who didn't play Friday night was a challenge. The boys stepped up to it (the challenge) and it was a bit warm today but it shows that the guys were taking care of themselves."

Missouri State started the contest with control offensively by taking an early 5-1 shot advantage.

The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead, however, in the 13th minute of the contest. Hector Cantele connected for his first score of the year from a ball by Chandler Klemm. Klemm battled for possession down the right side of the box before feeding Cantele right in front of the goal.

As the match progressed, Memphis closed the gap in regards to shots fired. In the 51st minute, the Tigers' Jackson Morse scored an insurance goal to lift Memphis to a 2-0 lead. It was Morse's team-leading third goal of the year. Carlos Hurtado was credited with the assist.

Missouri State finished the game with 10 shots compared to nine by Memphis. Junior goalkeeper Jake Leeker recorded seven saves in his third shutout of the season. He has now lowered his goals against average down to 1.00 and raised his save percentage to .867.

Next on the Tigers schedule is a trip to California for the San Diego State Tournament on September 9-11. Memphis will compete in two contests, beginning with a match against Cal State Fullerton Friday at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend against San Diego State Sunday at 11 a.m.
