van Meijel becomes fourth All-American in program history
FORMBY, England - University of Memphis junior Lars van Meijel became the fourth player in men's golf history, and the first since 1986 to earn Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA) 2016 Division I PING All-America honors, announced on Thursday afternoon.
van Meijel joins Hillman Robbins (1954), Greg Powers (1969), and Steve Metz (1986) as All-Americans within the Memphis men's golf program.Â
"I am so proud of Lars and fired up for our program," said men's golf head coach Blake Smart. "He is the first All-American in 30 years, and this lays a foundation for the future of the program"
Currently with Team Europe in the Arnold Palmer Cup, van Meijel ended 2015-16 with a 71.16 stroke per round average, lowest in the program's all-time history. His -10 at the Quail Valley Collegiate was the lowest round to par in program history, and his career average of 72.6 strokes per round stand second in the history of the program.
"Lars put in a ton of work, particularly mentally in the last 18 months," said Smart. "He was willing to listen and change, which led to him taking more advantage of his natural talent."
He was also twice named the American Athletic Golfer of the Month and earned All-AAC honors in 2016.
His European Team kicks off action with the Palmer Cup on Friday morning, van Meijel starting at 8:12 a.m. in Formby (2:12 a.m. CT). He and teammate Stuart Grehan will face off against Derek Bard and Michael Johnson in an alternate shot event.
