Team to compete in Colleton River Collegiate
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Following a fall season in which the Tigers placed in the top third of every tournament - including a pair of tournament victories - Memphis kicks off the 2016 spring season at the Colleton River Collegiate, hosted by Michigan State University at the Colleton River Plantation Club: Pete Dye Course.
Event: Colleton River Collegiate
Host: Michigan State University
When: March 7-8
Where: Colleton River Plantation Club: Pete Dye Course
Par: 72
Yardage: 7,300
Live Scoring: BirdieFire
"We are excited to finally get the Spring season kicked off," said Memphis head coach Blake Smart. "This start is later than we usually play, so I think everyone is itching to get on the road. That being said, I think we have had good prep time and with the mild winter we should be rust-free physically, but of course that is barely half the battle."
This season the Tigers will rely on the veteran duo of senior Thomas Perrot and junior Lars van Meijel, as both were recently named in the top three among European players in the Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings. Also in the lineup for young Tigers at the Colleton River Collegiate will be Eithel McGowen (junior), Taylor McCullum (sophomore), and Chase Harris (freshman), while J.C. Campbell (freshman) will be playing as an individual in the tournament.
van Meijel leads the team in strokes per round, averaging 70.6 from his 16 rounds during the fall season, including a career-low 65 at the Pinetree Intercollegiate. He took top individual honors in the Pinetree Intercollegiate, and finished inside of the top-five in all four of the fall tournaments, and had a fall aggregate score of -17, shooting under par in three of four total tournaments.
Perrot shot even par or below in all four fall tournaments, and finished with a fall stroke average of 70.8. Like van Meijel, he finished in the top-10 in every tournament in the fall, including taking top honors at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational where he was the only player to shoot even par in the tournament.
McGowen averaged 74.4 strokes per round during the fall season, as McCullum (75.7) and Harris (76.7) also head to the lineup shooting an average of sub-77 for the fall season.
"I think the boys will love the venue," said Smart. "We are going to have some fun on the way back to town playing some awesome courses, so it will be a good trip to get back in the swing of things and spend some quality time on the road."
