Former golfer returns to LPGA tour next season.
MEMPHIS – Former Memphis women's golfer Marissa Steen earned her LPGA tour card, Sunday, after finishing eighth on the Symetra Tour Money List. Steen finished eighth on the list with $72,496 in winnings, and as one of the top 10 on the tour money list, will now be a member of the LPGA next season.
That will be Steen's second stint on the LPGA tour. She qualified for the tour in 2014, after winning three events on the Symetra Tour and automatically moving to the LPGA tour. Steen would be named the Symetra Tour Golfer of the Year that season, making the cuts in 13 of 16 events and finishing as the tour's top money winner.
But in December of 2014, she came down with the flu and as a result of all the coughing with her illness, suffered three cracked ribs. She made the cut in three events, but then missed the cut in the final eight events of the year and lost her card. After working on her swing in the off-season, Steen returned to the Symetra Tour this season, where she made the cut in 18 of 20 events. She posted nine top 10 finishes this season, including a season-best second place finish at the W.B. Mason Championship back in May.
The LPGA calendar for Steen will get underway in January of 2017.
Steen is a 2012 graduate of the University of Memphis. She won six tournaments while at Memphis and was a 2012 first team, all-Conference USA honoree in her senior season. In 2011, as a junior, she was a C-USA Championship runner-up. She won the 2011 Memphis Women's Fall Invitational, the predecessor to the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate tournament that gets underway Monday at Ridgeway Country Club.
