Future Memphis Tiger to suit up for Canadian National Team
Incoming freshman women's soccer player Marie Levasseur will play for the Canadian National Team in the 2015 Pan American Games, to be played in Toronto, Ontario from July 10-26.
Â
Lavasseur and her Canadian teammates have the task of defending the gold medal won in the 2011 Pan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Since women's soccer made its debut in Pan American competition at the 1999 Winnipeg Games, Canada has won one gold, one silver, one bronze medal, and a fourth place finish.
Â
The team opens group play against Ecuador at the CIBC Hamilton Soccer Stadium on July 11. The team's other two group matches are against Costa Rica on July 15 and Brazil on July 19. The knockout stage will follow with semifinals on July 22 and the final July 25.
Â
"Anytime a player gets to represent their country, it's an amazing experience," Memphis Tigers head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Not only is it good for Marie but it's good for our university and our program. We're excited about Marie getting all of this experience before she comes in as a freshman. We will be rooting for her and will be looking forward to her getting here at the end of July."
Â
A member of the Canadian Youth National Team since the age of 16, Levasseur represented her country in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica in 2014 as well as claiming a silver medal with Canada at the 2013 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Â
Marie and her twin sister Catherine Levasseur will both play for Memphis starting in the fall of 2015. They have played together for the youth national teams as well as being standouts for Haute-Saint-Charles.
