Administrator increased financial, administrative efficiencies at Memphis
Over the past three years as the senior athletic administrator over finance and administration at the University of Memphis, Stacy Martin has had oversight in creating and making significant improvements to financial efficiencies within the department of intercollegiate athletics. She has also helped shape the department's administrative staff into the leanest and most proficient in the American Athletic Conference.
After having affected change and bolstering Memphis Athletics' administrative endeavors the last three years, Martin has accepted a position within the American Athletic Conference. She will become the league's Chief Financial Officer.
"Stacy Martin has done an extraordinary job during her tenure at the University of Memphis," said Director of Athletics Tom Bowen. "We are deeply indebted to her for the work she has done to make our department more efficient and effective. We are very happy for Stacy and her opportunity with the American Athletic Conference but at the same time we will greatly miss her."
At Memphis, Martin held a hybrid position which reported both to Bowen and the University's Vice President of Business and Finance, David Zettergren. She was promoted to Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Administration in January of this year.
During her tenure at the University of Memphis, Martin was named the College Athletic Business Management Association's Manager of the Year (2013). She served a five-year term on CABMA's executive board including a one-year term as president of the organization (2011-12).
In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Martin was the sport supervisor for Memphis' women's basketball program. She was the tournament director for the 2014 NCAA Men's Basketball Regional played in Memphis.
Martin joined the Memphis staff in September, 2012, after serving the previous two and half years as the Assistant Athletic Director for Business at Kansas State University.
When she joined Kansas State's athletics staff in 2010, the department faced a $2 million projected deficit. Within her first years, Martin worked to promote efficiency and cost containment. In May 2011, USA Today recognized as one of just 22 athletic departments in the nation to operate in a surplus for the 2009-10 academic year, and one of only five to do so while decreasing expenses for the previous year.
A native of Omaha, Neb., Martin began her professional career at her alma mater, San Jose State, where she was a four-year letterman and captain of SJSU's women's gymnastics team.
Beginning in 2002, she quickly gained administrative responsibilities and in 2006 was named Associate Athletic Director/Chief Operations Officer. She also served as the department's Senior Woman Administrator. At San Jose State, she had fiscal oversight of the department's $20-million annual budget for a department which had 16 sports, 28 departments and 115 employees.
Martin's leadership in San Jose State's business office resulted in an athletic department surplus for four consecutive years.
