Season ends to USF in quarterfinals for second straight season
Despite an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Jake Leeker, who made eight saves, Memphis lost 1-0 to USF in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals Saturday night at Corbett Stadium to end the Tigers season.
Â
"It was a tale of two halves. Give USF credit, at the end of the day they were probably the deserving team to go through," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "
Â
The Bulls grabbed the lead in the 28th minute on a goal by junior Melvin Becket that was assisted by Nazeem Bartman and Lindo Mfeka. USF had a 17-5 shot advantage in the match and outshot the Tigers 11-0 in the first half.
Â
The Tigers were only able to force one save out of USF goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic.
Â
Memphis (3-10-4) will have high hopes going into next season with the return of nine of the 11 players that started in the quarterfinal match, including three freshman and three sophomores.
Â
"There are a lot of positives to take out of this year. There were numerous underclassmen that played quality minutes. We played a heck of a schedule this year and I'm curious to see how many of those teams we played make the NCAA Tournament," Mulrooney said.
