Women’s Tennis Goes 5-0 on Day Two at ITA Regional

Tigers put perfect Friday in the books at Ohio Valley regional.
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. – The University of Memphis women's tennis team went 5-0 on the second day of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional championships at Purdue University on Friday. In doubles, the team of Hanna Sohn and Anki Wind advance to the quarterfinal round and Wind, Marta Morga and Kathryn Hughes all advanced to the Round of 32 with singles victories in the afternoon. In the consolation doubles draw, the team of freshman Janina Berres and junior Gabrielle Paul battled for an 8-7 (3) victory to advance to the quarters there.
In doubles, Sohn and Wind defeated conference foes Lauren Bellinger and Kelly Poggensee-Wei, 8-5, to earn an 8 a.m. Saturday match against the team of Frances Altick and Ellie Yates of Vanderbilt.
Wind was back on the court later in the afternoon and made straight set work of Tennessee's Brittany Lindl, 6-4, 6-0 to advance to a 10:45 a.m. match in the Round of 32. She will face Austin Peay's Lidia Yanes Garcia in the second round.
Morga had a little longer singles battle. After winning the first set, 6-3, she found herself in a tiebreak in the second set, falling 7-6 (2). But the junior bounced back to claim a 6-3 third set and advanced to an 11:45 a.m. match on Saturday against Tennessee's Ashley Bongart, who took out a seeded player in straight sets on Friday.
Hughes is the one Lady Tiger in the bottom half of the draw and she started her singles run there with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wright State's Linsey Verstrepen. She will be back on the court at 10 a.m., Saturday, to face Kentucky's Akvile Parazinskaite.
