IRVING, Texas - After tossing a complete-game one-hitter in a series-clinching 7-0 shutout over Marshall on Saturday, sophomore Sam Moll earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Moll became the first Memphis pitcher to hurl a complete-game one-hitter since 1994. The 7-0 shutout of Marshall marked the first shutout on the road for the Tigers since April 26, 2003 at Charlotte. Moll extended his streak of consecutive shutout innings to 16 with the complete-game shutout. The sophomore southpaw took a no hitter to the seventh and Marshall recorded its lone hit of the game with an infield single to short. The Lakeland, Tenn., native has allowed one earned run on 13 hits in his last four starts (30.2 innings), three against C-USA opponents. He struck out nine, the most for him against a C-USA opponent, one shy of his career high of 10.
Moll is the second U of M pitcher to earn C-USA's weekly accolade, this season, joining Chase Joiner who garnered the recognition on March 19, 2012. This week's honor marks the second of Moll's career, having earned the distinction on April 11, 2011. Moll is the 21st Memphis hurler to earn Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.
