MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tulane (19-8, 2-1) hit three home runs and defeated Memphis (12-16, 2-4) 7-3 on Sunday at FedExPark to win the three-game series between the clubs.
Tulane put a runner on third with one out in the first after Brandon Boudreaux singled to center to start the game. Boudreaux stole second and moved to third on a fly out to right. Jeremy Schaffer hit a hard chopper to first and Boudreaux strolled to far from third allowing Jacob Wilson to tag him out on the fielder's choice as he scampered back to the bag. The Tigers got out of the inning with Schaffer stranded at first.
The Green Wave opened up a five-run lead in the second as the Tigers issued three walks and a hit by pitch in the inning. A one-out walk, single by Briggs Barrios and a hit batter loaded the bases and Bowen Woodson was walked to plate the first run in the game. Boudreaux broke the game open as he belted a grand slam to right field to give Tulane the 5-0 lead.
Memphis left two runners in scoring position in the first two innings, but a three-run third got the Tigers back in the game. Zach Willis started it off with a single down the left field line and Adam McClain followed with a double. Wilson doubled off the wall in right-centerfield scoring Willis and McClain, but a throw to third got away allowing Wilson to score and cut the lead to 5-3.
Garrett Cannizaro hit two home runs, solo shots in the fifth and seventh, increasing the Green Wave lead to 7-3. Memphis had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but failed to chip away at the lead as they left both runners stranded in scoring position.
The Tigers put the leadoff man in the ninth, but a lineout double play at the first base bag ended the game. Kyle McKenzie (2-0) picked up the win as he allowed no runs on two hits in 5.2 innings of relief. Chase Joiner (1-3) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on six hits in five innings of work. Keaton Aldridge and Willis led the Tigers with two hits and Memphis out-hit the Green Wave 10-9 on the game.
Memphis begins a five-game road swing at Tennessee on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. (CT). The Tigers and Volunteers will meet for the first time since 1995 and the game will be aired live on Fox Sport South.
