MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- In a match that lasted into the early hours of Saturday morning, the Lady Tiger tennis team rolled past Saint Louis University in a 6-1 decision at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
"This was a great team win and we showed so much improvement within just one week from our last match," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said following the match. "SLU is a very underrated team and they will compete for the A10 title this year and be a possible NCAA team."
SLU came into the dual match with an impressive 9-3 record overall and fall to 9-4 with the loss. Meanwhile, Memphis moves to 11-6 (1-0 C-USA) with the win, just two victories shy of last years' win total (13).
The U of M knocked off all three SLU pairs in doubles play to open the match with a 1-0 lead. The Lady Tigers picked up two more points with wins at the top two flights in singles by sophomore Courtney Collins, ranked 106th nationally, and junior Mariya Slupska respectively, both netters improving to 13-4 marks in singles competition this season.
"I couldn't be more proud of the type of effort and focus each player our team put in this week in practice," Coach Walker said. "It showed tonight as we had clutch performances across the board."
Those clutch performances were at No. 3 (Mikesz def. Nalepa 6-2, 2-6, 6-2), No. 5 (Hawkins def. Tomalak 6-2, 3-6, 6-3) and No. 6 singles (Arques-Garcia def. M. Elmore 3-6, 6-3, 6-3), helping the Tigers secure their other three points in crucial third set victories.
The Billikens tallied their point in at No. 4 singles where Kelly Gray slipped to SLU's Stephanie Hollis 6-3, 6-3.
"The team needs some time to rest and refuel for the final stretch of the regular season," Coach Walker said. "We have some much needed days off ahead."
Memphis women's tennis is back in action April 1, when it travels to Tampa, Fla. to face USF at 2 p.m. in the first of two pivotal duals on the road. On April 3, the Blue and Gray continues Conference USA play in Orlando, Fla. against UCF.
