Memphis Defense Shuts Down Southeastern Louisiana, 80-44

The Memphis Tigers (4-1) used stifling defense to defeat the Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions (2-2), 80-44, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. Brittany Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County High School) recorded a game-high 18 points and Nicole Dickson (Greeneville, Tenn./Greeneville) notched her fourth-consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The last time a Tiger recorded four-consecutive double-doubles was in 1999 when Tamika Whitmore posted four-straight. This is the second game in a row in which Memphis scored more than 80 points, a feat last recorded by the Tigers in wins over Grambling State and Indiana at the beginning of the 2010-11 season.
"Southeastern Louisiana came in with a really experienced roster," Head Coach Melissa McFerrin said. "They had four seniors and I thought we came out really good in the first half. We had a three minute period where we didn't make great shot selections and let them get some rebounds, but we had a good first half. I was upset with our starters in the second half though. We need to get to get to the point where we play the way we did in the opening half for the entire 40 minutes of the game."
Pressuring defense from the Tigers forced 22 turnovers and 18-of-49 (36.7 percent) shooting for the Lady Lions. Memphis connected on 32-of-68 (47.1 percent) of its shots and only committed 12 turnovers. The Tigers dominated points in the paint (54-32), points off of turnovers (30-9) and fast-break points (22-8), as they never trailed in the contest after spring out to a quick 9-0 lead.
Ramses Lonlack (Bertoua, Cameroon/Stoneleigh Burnham School) and Jasmine Lee (Bessemer, Ala./Jess Lanier HS) joined Carter and Dickson in double figures, with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir (Springfield, Mass./New Leadership Charter) dished out six assists on the evening.
Memphis led at the half 46-18 after forcing 13 turnovers and tallying 19 points off of the miscues. From the onset of the half, the Tigers were off and running and held a 22-4 advantage in fast break points. Memphis also held a decisive advantage in points in the paint, 32-16.
Lee led all-scorers in the first half with 12 points and Lonlack added 11. The Tigers connected on 19-of-35 (54.3 percent) shot attempts, while SE Louisiana made 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) of its shots.
Aja Gibson paced the Lady Lions with 14 points and six rebounds, while Brandi Simmons added eight points. Kelli Jenkins dished out four assists in the losing effort.
Memphis will return from the Thanksgiving break with a Sunday game against Texas-Arlington, Sunday, at 2 p.m. That game will be the Tigers' annual Take a Kid to the Game event, where all children will receive free admission with one full price adult ticket (adult tickets are just $5.00).
