Tiger Student-Athletes To Be Honored Wednesday Night

Memphis, Tenn. - A school-record 196 University of Memphis student-athletes earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the fall 2010 semester, and they will be recognized for their accomplishments at the men's basketball game on Wednesday. The ceremony will take place at halftime of the Memphis-UCF matchup that is set for a 7 p.m. tip.
Of the 196 student-athletes to achieve at least a 3.0 GPA, 29 earned a 4.0 GPA for the fall semester and 108 were named to the Dean's List with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The women's soccer team, which won its fourth-straight C-USA title in 2010, produced the most 4.0 student-athletes with five. Several sports produced three 4.0 student-athletes, including football, men's soccer, women's track and volleyball.
In addition, the overall GPA of the department was a record-setting 2.96, and marked the second-straight semester that the Tigers have garnered a GPA above 2.9. Thirteen out of 17 teams recorded averages of 3.0 or higher and the individual sport leaders were men's tennis (3.55) and women's golf (3.7). The baseball, men's golf, rifle, men's soccer, men's tennis and men's track teams all had their best semester team GPAs ever.
The Center for Athletic Academic Services (CAAS), under the direction of Dr. Joe Luckey, is dedicated to the academic and personal development of all Tiger student-athletes. Luckey is assisted by staff members Valorie Lott, Fred Quarles, Kimya Massey, Jessie Mills, Kristin Henke, Bridget VanLandeghem and Sharon Richardson as well as interns, graduate assistants, tutors and academic mentors.
