BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - Memphis was hurt by 26 Tiger turnovers and by a hustling UAB team that tracked down 17 offensive rebounds in a 65-58 loss in Birmingham, Sunday. The loss drops Memphis to 15-5 on the season and 2-2 in C-USA play and ups UAB's mark to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Tigers got off to a good start, but when UAB switched to a zone defense, Memphis stopped looking inside and then let UAB drivers start penetrating the paint and pitching out to three point shooters. UAB had four different players connect on triples in the opening half while the UAB zone defense held the Tigers to just four field goals in the final eight and a half minutes to build a 38-32 Blazer lead at the break. Part of Memphis' first half problems was also itself, as the Tigers committed 16 first half turnovers, including five for senior point guard Alex Winchell, who had a UAB defender on her the second she touched the ball all night.
Memphis clamped down on defense to start the second half, holding UAB without a field goal until losing senior guard Amanda Peterson from UAB on back-to-back trips down the floor in transition. From there, Amber Jones took over for the Blazers, continually driving left and hitting floaters over the Tiger defense. Memphis, who lost junior guard Brittany Carter to her third foul with 17:31 remaining in the second half, took advantage of her return, with the Georgia native draining back to back deep buckets to start a Memphis run that pulled the Tigers within range. Carter then grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed the ball ahead. That pass was picked off, but senior guard Alex Winchell stole it right back and the ball found its way down to Nicole Dickson on the block, who scored it to give the Tigers a lead at 58-57. But that would be the final points the Tigers would score as it was UAB limiting Memphis to one and done looks while closing out the win.
Carter led Memphis with 18 points in 28 minutes, while Jasmine Lee added a double-double of 10 points and 16 rebounds. UAB had three players in double-digits, led by Peterson's 15 points, including 5-of-13 from three-point range. Jones finished with 11 points, 10 in the second half, and Nakia McDaniel added 11 points in 22 minutes.
Memphis will return home to continue conference play when the Tigers host UCF, Thursday, at 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
