Orlando, Fla. -
The Memphis Spirit Squads captured a national championship title in the Division IA Hip Hop competition Sunday at the 2011 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship, produced by Universal Cheerleaders Association and Universal Dance Association. The event was held at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.
The Tigers edged Cincinnati and LSU, which finished second and third, respectively, for the Hip Hop National Championship. It is the 13th national title for the Memphis dance team, and the third national championship in the Hip Hop Division. The dance team won consecutive championships from 1986-1994, and also took top honors in 2000, 2007 and 2008.
The Tigers placed third in the Division IA Pom division behind the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and the University of Cincinnati, while the all girls squad finished fifth nationally. The co-ed cheerleading team placed eighth this year.
The Memphis Spirit Squads are coached by Frankie Conklin and Carol Lloyd, and consist of a varsity co-ed squad (6-8 male and 6-8 female members); a varsity all-girls squad (20-22 female members), a dance team (24 female members) and the Tiger mascot, Pouncer.
