MEMPHIS, Tenn.--In a physical match that saw both teams battling for position and control throughout, Oral Roberts outlasted Memphis 1-0 Saturday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Oral Roberts struck in the 65th minute when #11 Jarrett Hamilton fired a low strike past Tiger keeper Jordan Leedle.
Memphis had chances throughout the game, netting 11 shots and 10 corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net. Hamilton, who scored four goals in 15 games a season ago, received a low cross from Marco Hernandez at the top left corner of the box before sending it through for the score.
Cody McCoy almost answered the Tigers' prayers' in the 87th minute, when a strike from 20 yards outside the box grazed the crossbar before sailing high.
The Tigers also nearly evened the mark in the 69th minute when a shot by Andreas Guentner ricocheted off the crossbar and Cody McCoy was able to head it back in on the rebound. McCoy, however, was deemed offside by the referee and the goal was disallowed.
Andreas Guentner led Memphis with four shots, while Cody McCoy and Mark Sherrod each recorded two.
Jordan Leedle recorded three saves in his third career start in goal.
Memphis established control of the ball for the first 20 minutes of the opening half and kept in on the Golden Eagles' half of the field for most of the half.
The Tigers managed three shots, but were unable to capitalize.
The Tigers' closest chance came on a Parker Duncan breakaway in the 4th minute, but Oral Roberts was able to turn him away and keep things even for the remainder of the first half. In all, Memphis managed six shots to go along with corner kick opportunities.
Oral Roberts recorded two saves to go along with two corners and two shots.
Each squad recorded five fouls in a half that saw physical play as the teams battled for position and ball control.
Both teams had great opportunities in the 45th minute, as Oral Roberts nearly connected on a header by Hernandez before Jordan Leedle turned him away. Mark Sherrod nearly found the back of the net on the ensuing contour attack, as the redshirt-freshman forward pushed deep into the box before having a shot saved by Andrew Techanchuk.
Memphis will take on North Florida in its next matchup on Sept. 10, as the squad travels to Birmingham, Ala. for the UAB "Soccer for a Cure" Classic. The Tigers will also face Charlotte on Sept. 11 as part of the tournament.
