NASHVILLE, Tenn. – James Maglasang finished 13th in his debut for the Tigers and the Lady Tigers earned an eighth place team finish at the Belmont/Vanderbilt Opener at Percy Warner Park, Friday.
“The underclassmen really performed well for us today, on both sides,” said cross country coach Doug Clark. “We had some frazzled nerves, but got some good experience under their belts.”
Maglasang, a freshman, paced the Tigers with a 16:06.17 mark in the five-kilometer race, besting runners from Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and Belmont, among others. Sophomore Jacob Skinner (17:55.03) and senior Joe Coneo (17:57.25) clocked in at 64th and 66th, respectively.
“James Maglasang ran with poise and maturity for us today,” said Clark. “He ran a confident, conservative race until making his move late and finished high for us.”
Newcomer Darrik Turner (18:06.74, 71st) and junior Curtis Gibbs (18:45.40, 73rd) rounded out the scoring for the Tigers, who finished ninth as a team.
Freshmen Ellen Kildal (15:47.96) and Jenny Johnston (15:51.75) paced the Lady Tigers, coming in at respectable finishes of 54th and 57th.
Newcomers Ida Fillingsnes (76th, 16:13.76) and Meagan Nichols (85th, 16:40.74) also scored points for the Lady Tigers. Sophomore Louisa Lingley is the only returning Lady Tiger who scored, finishing 83rd in a 16:39.15 time.
The U of M travels to Little Rock next Friday for the UALR Invite, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
