MEMPHIS, Tenn.--Marshall's Matt Risher's header in the 93rd minute pushed the Thundering Herd to a 2-1 decision over Memphis in Conference USA action Saturday evening at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tiger drop to 2-3-0 on the year, while Marshall remains unbeaten at 5-0-2.
Risher's sudden death score came off a set piece just over three minutes into the extra period. Risher connected with Travis Brent's feed over the Memphis defense for the game-winner and putting an end to what was a rollicking, back-and-forth contest after 93 minutes.
After 40 minutes of the match were dominated by defense, Memphis freshman midfielder B.J. Williams found the upper 90 for his first career goal and the 1-0 lead. Sophomore J.J. Greer fed Williams the ball about 25 yards on the left side and Williams fired the howler from 14 yards out for the score.
Each team finished the first half with three shots. Memphis and Marshall both placed two shots on goal in the first half.
Marshall forward Tom Jackson scored the equalizer for the Thundering Herd in the 58th minute. Off a free kick, Marshall midfielder Diego Ayala served the ball in and Jackson headed the ball in from 10 yards out.
Each team had multiple second half opportunities, particularly off corner kicks. The Thundering Herd had four in the second 45 minutes of play, while Memphis had three chances from the corner.
The end of the match saw both squads make end-to-end runs in the final minute. Freshman Martin Hunter pulled a brilliant save off a Jackson header at point blank range. At the other end, a hard right boot from junior Parker Duncan was deflected just to the right of the goal. Regulation time would expire before the Tigers could take the ensuing corner kick.
Memphis was outshot 9-6 in the contest.
Making his first career start in net, Hunter finished the contest with four saves while Marshall goalkeeper and 2009 all-conference freshman team pick Daniel Withrow had two saves.
The Tigers will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for the SIU-Edwardsville Tournament on Friday, Sept. 24 to play the Kangaroos of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, along with host SIU Edwardsville. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.
