ORLANDO, Fla. – In its first Conference USA match on the road, the University of Memphis men’s soccer team got off to a slow start and fell to the UCF Knights, 3-0, Saturday night.
“The better team won, no doubt,” said Memphis head coach Richie Grant. “They were great in the middle and up front, tough and athletic. Tonight, technically we were inferior and we have to improve.”
UCF got on the board late in the first half, with Warren Creavalle netting a 44th-minute goal to send the Knights into halftime with a one-goal lead. Eduardo Jimenez and Yaron Bacher assisted on Creavalle’s second goal of the match.
“Was disappointing to concede so close to the end of the half,” said Grant. “That was an important goal, because up to that point we had played well.”
The Knights didn’t wait as long to net their second goal of the match, with Cameron Cooksey’s fourth goal of the 2010 campaign sending the Knights ahead by two goals. Creavalle and Nik Robson assisted on this goal, with Cooksey putting it away at the near post.
“Giving up the early second half goal started us off poorly,” said Grant.
In the 70th minute, Luiz Yamashita salted the match away for UCF, taking feeds from Robson and Scott Spencer and putting a third shot of the night past Memphis sophomore keeper Jordan Leedle.
Leedle had a frustrating night in net, allowing three goals without stopping a UCF shot for his season’s fifth loss.
The Tigers will need a quick turnaround after this loss, with a trip down the Florida coast looming before Tuesday’s match-up with Florida International, which will begin at 7 p.m. (EST).
“We have to let this one go and get ready for Tuesday,” said Grant. “On this trip, we feel like we have to come away with some points.”
