Sixth-Ranked SMU Tops Memphis 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sixth-ranked SMU traveled to the Bluff City with a three-match win streak and extended their streak with a 3-0 victory over the University of Memphis men's soccer team on Saturday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
After Memphis (3-9-1, 0-5-1 C-USA) controlled the tempo for much of the first half, Leone Cruz of SMU found Juan Castillo for a go-ahead goal in the 23rd minute. Castillo lofted the shot from inside the box to the near post for his ninth score of the season and Cruz was credited with his third assist.
SMU (13-1-0, 5-1-0 C-USA) came out firing in the second half as Arthur Ivo scored his seventh goal of the season for the Mustangs just two minutes into the second half. Memphis was whistled for a foul just outside the box and Ivo played the free kick from 20 yards away. Ivo fired a rocket inside the right post to give SMU the 2-0 lead.
Cruz struck again in the 59th minute off a rebound. Memphis was once again whistled for a foul just outside the box and Ivo played the free kick and hit the crossbar with the shot. Cruz gathered the rebound and scored his second goal of the night to give SMU the 3-0 lead.
Memphis finished the match with a slight edge on shots, 9-8, with each team placing four shots on goal. Parker Duncan and Mark Sherrod each had four shots, two on goal, for Memphis.
The Tigers travel to Missouri State on Tuesday for a non-conference match slated for a 7 p.m. kick-off in Springfield, Mo. Memphis returns to Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. when Alabama A&M plays their final men's soccer match as an organized program.
