MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis fought valiantly, but was unable to convert on its opportunities in a hard-fought 2-1 loss to No. 5/7 Tulsa Saturday evening at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Tigers drop to 2-6-0 overall, 0-2-2 in C-USA action, while the Golden Hurricane improves to 7-1-0, 2-0-0 in league play.
Tulsa opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal by Justin Chavez. Golden Hurricane forward Ashley McInnes was credited with the assist after he found Chavez, who received the ball inside the 18-yard area and fired a rocket for the score.
McInnes increased the Tulsa lead with a 48th-minute tally. James Gulley gathered the ball just past midfield and lobbed a pass over the top of the Memphis defense and McInnes punished the Tiger defense with a howler from 12 yards away.
Parker Duncan answered in the 70th minute with an unassisted goal from eight yards out. Duncan used a back heel tap to get the ball past Tulsa netminder Ray Clark for his third goal of the season.
Junior midfielder Cody McCoy assisted on the goal, his first career point for the Tigers.
The match got physical late, with Tulsa's Kyle Cummings earning a yellow card for rough play in the 87th minute.
The Tigers continued to rally but ran out of time to draw even despite late chances for Mark Sherrod and Jamal Keene.
After going to his bench early and often in the early part of the year, Richie Grant stuck with his starters for much of this match, with six players going the full 90 minutes for the Tigers, including senior defender Rory O'Connor's sixth match going the distance.
The Tigers outshot the Golden Hurricane 13-8, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Redshirt freshman Mark Sherrod led the Tigers with four shots on the evening.
Memphis keeper Jordan Leedle and Tulsa's Clark made two saves each.
Memphis returns to the pitch on Tues., Oct. 5, when it hosts the UCA Bears at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
