Memphis, Tenn. -
The Lady Tigers soccer team responded to a deflating loss Friday night and knocked off Evansville 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
"I think today was a crucial game for this team," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We were at a low Friday night with our performance, not the loss but the performance. For the girls to come out with the energy they had and to respond the way they did, speaks to their character."
Junior forward Amanda Olszewski netted the game-winning goal in the 35th minute on a rebounded shot by junior forward Melissa Smith. Olszewski connected on the goal from three yards in front of the net.
Sophomore midfielder Julia Ignacio netted her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute giving the Lady Tigers the 2-0 lead early in the second half. Ignacio placed the ball in the back left corner of the net after Purple Aces goalkeeper Theresa Bagby misplayed a ball in front of the net.
Junior forward Ashley Berra connected on her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 73rd minute giving Memphis the 3-0 advantage. Ignacio was credited with the assist on a cross pass to Berra.
Smith finished off the scoring for the Lady Tigers in the 80th minute with an unassisted goal from five yards in front of the net. The Lady Tigers finished Sunday’s match with a school record 50 shots. The previous record was 44 recorded in the 1995 season. Smith led Memphis with 10 shots (five on goal) followed by junior forward Vendula Strnadova’s eight shots (one shot on goal).
Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Boyle made her first start of the season and notched the shutout for the Lady Tigers. Boyle made seven saves on the game that saw Memphis out-shoot Evansville 50-7.
"Jordan has been doing really well," Monaghan said. "Elise is our starting goalkeeper but she has had some moments where she hasn't been at her best. We felt that the right decision was to go with Jordan today. Elise has a ton of potetinal and we have to make sure she stays at her best and make sure she is mentally focused and ready to go."
The Lady Tigers begin defending their back-to-back conference championships on Friday Sept. 25th as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a 4 pm kick-off against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss.
"To end the non-conference schedule on a positive note is huge," Monaghan said. "Being confident going into conference play is extremely important. The way we ended non-conference today, I expect us to come out and play Southern Miss with a lot of confidence."
