BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Memphis men's soccer team lost in overtime on Friday afternoon to the New Hampshire Wildcats, 1-0 in the first game of the Smith Barney/Nike Soccer Classic in Burlington, Vt. The Tigers and Wildcats battled to a draw in regulation, but Rob Thompson's New Hampshire squad scored first in the sudden-death overtime period to catapult the Wildcats to the win. New Hampshire improves to 3-0 on the season, while Memphis drops to 1-2-0. The Wildcats are ranked as the No. 7 team in the Northeast region according to the NSCAA.

"We are disappointed to lose the game, but to tell you the truth we are little bit more disappointed with our performance today," said Head Coach Richie Grant. "It was a difficult game with the wind and the heat, but that isn't an excuse for losing. We didn't take care of the ball. That is something we are going to have to work on and improve on before our game on Sunday against Vermont."

Chris Banks, a junior forward from Westborough, Mass., scored the lone goal in the contest when he connected from 10 yards out 57 seconds into the first overtime period. The Wildcats had two passes behind the midfield line before one was launched behind the defense where Banks took the ball and put it past Michael Goodlett in goal for the Tigers. Banks was named the America East Rookie of the Year in 2006.

The match was plagued by gusty winds throughout. The team playing with the wind controlled the action in both halves. In the first half, New Hampshire played with the wind and took 10 shots compared to Memphis' three shots. Banks had a shot in the first half that was blocked by a Memphis defender just in time, protecting Goodlett and keeping the game notted at 0-0. Kyle Urso also had an opportunity to put the Wildcats ahead in the first half on a shot from 20 yards out, but Goodlett, a junior from Bolton, Miss., made a diving save for the Tigers.

Memphis tried to take advantage of playing with the wind in the second half. The Tigers took nine shots in the second half, compared to New Hampshire's seven shots. Bradley Jacobs, a freshman from Franklin, Tenn., had a scoring opportunity from the middle of the box, but the Wildcats' goalie Colin O'Donnell dove for the save. Memphis had two other opportunities, one by Sean Goulding and one by Tripp Harkins, set up by corner kicks but both shots went above the net.

O'Donnell, the Wildcats' sophomore goalkeeper from Springfield, Mass., had two saves in the first half, while pitching a shutout and earning the win for New Hampshire. O'Donnell is 3-0 in goal during the 2008 season. Goodlett had five saves, four of which took place in the first half. The junior moved to 1-1 on the season.

Memphis will next face the Vermont Catmounts at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt. The Catamounts are 1-0-1 on the season.
