Senior Adam Amar homered twice and drove in three, but a four-run seventh inning by Michigan sent the Tigers into the elimination round of the 2007 NCAA Nashville Regional with a 10-7 loss. Memphis will now face the loser of the Vanderbilt/Austin Peay contest at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
After a two-run blast off the leftfield foul pole by Joey Lieberman cut Memphis' deficit to 5-4, the Tigers gave away three unearned tallies to fall behind 9-4 in the seventh. Nate Recknagel led off the frame by reaching on an error. Adam Abraham then drew a one-out walk, and the two scored when Doug Pickens blasted a two-run double off the leftfield wall. Pickens scored on a bunt single by Kevin Cislo. Cislo stole second and scored when Brad Roblin single to left.
Amar brought Memphis to within three runs when he launched his second homer of the afternoon--a lined drive over the left centerfield wall-- to make it a 9-6 ballgame.
Memphis rallied for a run in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but was unable to complete the comeback.
In its first NCAA Regional contest since 1994, Memphis jumped on the board first as Amar quickly jumped on a Zach Putnam fastball, sending it over the 35-foot leftfield wall and onto the roof of Memorial Gymnasium.
The Tigers went up 2-0 in the third when Michael Murray drove Tyler Huelsing in with a single through the left side.
That's when Tiger starter Scott McGregor (5-4) ran into trouble. The Wolverine offense touched the right-hander for three runs in the inning and never trailed from that point on.
Michigan stretched its lead to 5-2 in the home half of the fifth when Recknagel drove an RBI-triple to centerfield and then scored on a single by Pickens. Both Recknagel and Pickens posted two hits and drove in three on the day.
The Wolverines won the battle at the plate, out hitting Memphis 13-11. Lieberman's home run was the 27th of his career as a Tiger, while Amar produced his milestone 30th round-tripper. The senior is second all-time at Memphis in home runs. Murray, Bill Moss and Amar had two hits each. Murray extended his hit streak to a career-long 21 games. Huelsing was the leader of the offense, banging out a team-high three singles and scoring two runs.
Putnam went eight innings and fanned seven to lead Michigan to its 40th win of the year, while McGregor surrendered five runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out two. Dusty Davis came on in relief of McGregor to strike out four in two frames.
