University of Memphis men's soccer players Dayton O'Brien and Daniel Dobson were both named to the National Coaches Association of America/adidas All-Midwest team on Monday.
O'Brien is the first Tiger to ever be named to the All-Midwest region's first team. It is the third regional recognition for the junior from Memphis, Tenn., who was named to the third team in 2002 and 2003.
The Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, O'Brien finished the 2004 season ranked third in the nation in assists with 14. He became the all-time assist leader at Memphis with a three-year total of 25. The midfielder/forward also broke the Tiger record for most assists in a season. O'Brien's eight goals were second on the team. His four game-winning goals helped lead Memphis to both the C-USA regular season and championship titles for the first time in school history. O'Brien also led the team in points with 30.
A second team selection, Dobson earned his first All-Midwest regional honor in his four-year career at Memphis. The senior midfielder from Garland, Texas scored his biggest goal of his career in the C-USA championship game against UAB to give the Tigers a come-from-behind victory and a NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 1993. Dobson, the team captain for the 2004 season, scored five goals with three of them being game-winners. He finished second on the team in assists with seven and had 17 points.
Dobson became the fifth Tiger to be named to a NSCAA/adidas All-Midwest Region team. Other past recipients are Andy Metcalf (2003), Sean Fraser (2000, 2001) and Chris Schmidt (2002). Prior to becoming a member of the Midwest Region, Memphis belonged to the South Region and placed four players on its regional teams. Tigers named to the All-South Region include Rogerio Lima (1996, 1997), Thomas Ohlmeier (1993), Trevor Buckland (1988, 1989) and Donal McDonagh (1988).
As a first team selection, O'Brien is eligible for the NSCAA All-America Team. The team will be announced on Friday, December 10 in conjunction with the NCAA College Cup held in Carson, Calif.
