Carson, Calif. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named University of Memphis junior Dayton O'Brien to its 2004 NSCAA/adidas Men's NCAA Division 1 All-America Team on Friday.
The midfielder from Memphis, Tenn., is the first ever Tiger men's soccer player to be named to an All-America team. O'Brien, a second team selection, is the only Conference USA player to be named to one of the three All-America teams. He is the one of three from the Midwest Region selected, joining SMU's Ugochukwu Ihemelu and Tulsa's Ryan Pore. Teams in next year's C-USA have five selections.
A NSCAA All-Midwest First Team selection, the Evangelical Christian graduate scored eight goals and made 14 assists to help the Tigers capture their first-ever conference regular season title and conference tournament title. O'Brien's 14 season assists is the most ever in Tiger history and ranked third nationally in 2004. His 26 career assists is the all-time Memphis record. O'Brien led Memphis with 30 points.
The 2004 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year was the first Tiger ever to be named to College Soccer News' Team of the Week on Sept. 27, 2004 after collecting seven points on five assists and a goal against Evansville and Charlotte. He was twice picked as the Conference Offensive Player of the Week had five multi-assist games. O'Brien scored the game-winning goals in wins against Centenary, Charlotte, DePaul and Lipscomb and the only goal in a 1-1 tie against UIC. He assisted on game-winning goals against Evansville, #21 Saint Louis, #17 UAB and East Carolina.
