MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- - University of Memphis baseball player Joe Crass has been selected by the Officers and Executive Committee of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) as the recipient of the Association's 2003 Postgraduate Scholarship Award.
Crass, a senior Marketing Management major from Clarksville, Tenn., was nominated for the scholarship by Tiger Clubs Annual Giving Coordinator Darian Westerfield and was selected to receive the $2,000 grant from NAADD based on his overall commitment to graduate studies, along with his G.P.A. and ability to balance academics and athletics.
The scholarship, which was open to any student with aspirations of a career in university athletics administration, is valid for post-graduate studies at the school of Crass's choice.
Affectionately known as "Diamond Joe" to teammates and fans, Crass plans to continue his education in Sports Management with a concentration in Finance. His future career goals are to stay in athletics administration whether it is at the University or Professional ranks. "I feel honored to receive this award," said Crass. "I am blessed to be at the University of Memphis and much of my success is because of the people here. I am just honored and thankful."
Plans for an on-campus event to present Crass with the award have yet to be finalized. However, he will be recognized via a video presentation during NAADD's 10th Anniversary Workshop held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., during the Director's Cup luncheon on Sunday, June 15th.
A reserve outfielder for the Tigers, Crass has seen limited action on the diamond, but made his first start in his hometown of Clarksville versus Austin Peay on Tuesday. A redshirt junior on the baseball field, Crass is uncertain on whether or not he will return to the Tigers for his final year of eligibility.
