Former Tiger All-American basketball player Elliot Perry has joined the athletic department staff at The University of Memphis. He will work with the Tiger Clubs in development and fund raising and will assist Athletic Director R.C. Johnson with special projects and community relations. Perry will be paid through funds that he raises.
"We are elated to have one of our former players join the athletic department staff," said Johnson. "Elliot Perry was a renowned athlete for the Tigers who built quite a basketball reputation as a Tiger. He has now returned to Memphis after a tremendous professional career and continues to build on his reputation in this community.
"He received his degree from The University of Memphis and I could not think of a better individual to help us spread the Tiger message to the community."
A native of Memphis and a graduate of Treadwell High School, Perry was one of the finest point guards to ever play for the Tigers. He lettered for four seasons and finished his career as the second-leading scorer in school history with 2,209 points. He led Memphis to four consecutive postseason tournaments and 76 wins, while starting every game of his four-year career. Perry remains the Tigers' career leader in steals (304) and ranks in the top 10 in 29 different statistical categories.
Perry was named the Metro Conference's Freshman of the Year in 1988 and was selected by Sport Magazine as the top freshman point guard in the nation. He was named to the 1989 Associated Press All-America team and the 1990 Basketball Weekly All-America squad and was twice named All-Metro Conference first-team.
Off the court, Perry graduated in four years without ever taking a summer school class. In February of 1992, his number 34 jersey was retired by The University. Following his career at Memphis, Perry was a second-round NBA Draft selection of the Los Angeles Clippers and played professionally 11 years before retiring last season.
