Crosstown-Rival CBU Nips Memphis 2-1 In Double Overtime

Memphis, Tenn. - Senior Missy Gregg netted the game-winning goal for Christian Brothers in double-overtime, as the Lady Bucs defeated Memphis for the second-straight year 2-1 at Signaigo Field on the CBU campus. Gregg's goal was her 54th of the season for CBU (18-1), who is the second-ranked team in Division II women's soccer.
Memphis (8-9-1) had a great chance to escape with a victory in regulation, however Senior Alison Baker sent the potential game-winner off the far post with just five seconds remaining then put the rebound into the side of the net as time expired sending the match into overtime.
"It was a classic CBU-Memphis game," Lady Tiger Head Coach Brooks Monaghan said. "I'm pleased with the way we played in the second half after getting off to a sluggish start. As easy as we lost it, we could have won it. We have to forget about this one and start thinking about Tulane."
Sophomore Jocelyn Raine put Memphis ahead 1-0 in the 28th with her first goal of the season and first of her career as a Lady Tiger. The Lady Bucs then tied the match with less than a minute remaining in the opening half when Margaret Saurin scored an unassisted goal.
CBU kept Memphis goalkeeper Katarina Wicksell busy in the Lady Tigers' net as she recorded her second double-digit save effort of the season stopping 11 Lady Buc shots. For the match, CBU outshot Memphis 19-13. CBU goalkeeper Jennifer Simon had six saves.
Gregg led all players with nine shot attempts. Saurin assisted on Gregg's game-winning goal giving her three points on the night. Raine along with sophomores Kirsty Marr and Amy Ciezki and freshman Robyn Smart each had two shots for Memphis.
Memphis is 1-3-1 in overtime matches this season with its lone victory coming in a 3-2 decision over Mississippi State. The Lady Tigers will conclude their Conference-USA schedule in a pivotal match Friday against Tulane at 7 p.m., in New Orleans. A victory over the Green Wave will clinch a berth in the C-USA tournament (Nov. 6-9, Charlotte, N.C.) for Memphis.
