Memphis, Tenn. - Former University of Memphis head baseball coach and current assistant athletic director Bob Kilpatrick will be honored between the Alumni and Blue-Gray baseball games Sunday, Oct. 20, at Nat Buring Stadium on the South Campus.
The University is sponsoring "Coach Bob Kilpatrick Day" Sunday and will have a ceremony at approximately 1:30 p.m., following the Alumni Game and just prior the Blue-Gray game between current Tiger players scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Kilpatrick is retiring from the University after 31 years of service to assume the role of athletic director and head baseball coach at the Southern Baptist Educational Center. He has spent the last 10 years as an assistant athletic director in charge of coordinating Spring sports for the U of M.
Coach "K", as he is known around the athletic department, is the all-time leader in career wins in Tiger baseball history posting a 653-341-2 record in 21 years as the head coach. His 1978 squad, which finished with a then school-record 40 wins, captured the Metro Conference Tournament and led the nation with a .357 batting average. The current school-record for wins in a season is 52 which was achieved by the 1994 squad.
If inclement weather is in the area on Sunday, which the forecasters are calling for, then the ceremony for Coach Kilpatrick will be moved inside to the turf room in the football practice facilites adjacent to Nat Buring Stadium.
A home run hitting contest is one of the scheduled events. It is slated to begin at 11 a.m. and no entry fee is necessary to participate.
