Laszlo Leads Memphis to Plough Park Invitational Win

University of Memphis runner Balazs Laszlo led three Tiger runners who finished among the top five as the U of M opened the 2001 cross country season with a team win at the Plough Park Invitational held at Shelby Farms Saturday.
Laszlo completed the four-mile course in a time of 21:40.22 just ahead of teammate Ricky McLain who crossed the finish line at 21:44.11. Rhodes's John Knight was third (21:55.01), Mississippi's Hank Campbell was fourth (22:05.71) and the U of M's Derek Nakluski rounded out the top five (22:06.71).
Memphis finished with 31 points, well ahead of Mississippi and Southeast Missouri State who tied for second with 77 points appeace. Mississippi College was fourth (81 points), Rhodes fifth (85) and Tennessee-Martin placed sixth (138).
"This is a balanced team," said U of M men's coach Glenn Hays. "There is not a large difference from one to six. We also have a balance of freshmen and juniors on this team."
Southeast Missouri's Kaci Pilcher won the women's first-place finisher and led SEMO to a team title with a time of 11:59.75. Rhodes's Amy Paine was second (12:10.86) while Memphis's Wendy Ragle finished third (12:13.74).
Rhodes placed second with 42 points while Memphis was third in the team results with 92 points. Rounding out the team scoring was fourth-place Tennessee-Martin (112 points), Mississippi placed fifth (126) and Union was sixth (145).
"I'm pleased with how our women's team ran," said women's coach Stan Hollenbeck. "We didn't come in early this year. For a week of training, I thought they ran well as a team. I was proud of the effort."
Memphis will travel to Murray State Saturday for its second meet of the year.
